In an era in which many Catholics are disillusioned, questioning their faith and full of doubts about the relevance of Catholicism in this world, a man raises his voice to the biggest community in the world with a clarity that is singular and inspirational. Mathew Kelly reveals in this book, “Rediscovering Catholicism,” the essence of authentic Catholic spirituality, helping to recu- perate the richness of our history, traditions and rich doctrines.
There are 1,200 million Catholics in the world; there are 67 million Catholics in the United States. This is at least 15 mil- lion people more than is needed to elect the president of the United States and each day the Catholic church feeds, gives refuge to, dresses more people, takes care of more sick , visits more incarcerated and educates more people than any other institution on the face of the Earth could ever dream.
In Jesus’s time hospitals didn’t exist. The sick would cluster on the side of the roads or outside the city and there is where Jesus would cure them… The true essence of medical assis- tance and taking care of the sick arose through the church, the religious orders, in response to the value and dignity that the Gospel gives each human being. Before the church introduced the education for the common good, this was reserved only for the nobility. Today almost all the Western world is educated, thanks to the precursor role of the Church in universal educa- tion.
The reach and contribution of the Church is enormous, alt- hough not well known. Our contribution at the local, national, and global levels continues to be extraordinary, despite many errors, inefficiencies and recent scandals. We have forgotten our history and as a result we permit that the anti-Catholic segment of the media distort our history daily.
The Parish Mission, which we are going to have next week from November 16th to 19th, is an exceptional opportunity for us to analyze the book, “Rediscovering Catholicism,” to discover that our Catholic religion is great and to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and in our Church. If 67 million Cath- olics in the United States were better, something incredible would happen! Come so that together we can explore the greatness of our faith, so that when we celebrate our 60th Anniversary of the founding of our Parish we will become committed to being part of the solution and of being Christian leaders.
